I have enjoyed fishing since 1989 as a Nisswa Professional Guide. My first experience as a Nisswa Guide was the 1989 Governor's Opener on Pelican Lake when I hosted a Minnesota State Senator and his wife. I have thoroughly enjoyed guiding and have good success. I've enjoyed fishing with a variety of clients from all walks of life. Probably my most famous customers were Jim Zorn and Jim Wacker, who, at the time, were University of Minnesota football coaches. I had a super fun time with "Benchwarmer Bob" Lurtsema several summers ago! |
I am married and have four children. Living in the Brainerd area of Minnesota enables me to satisfy my passion for fishing. The Brainerd Chamber of Commerce claims that we have 492 lakes within 30 miles! The golf course count has to be getting close to that number as well.
I moved to Brainerd in 1980 to teach mathematics at Brainerd High School and retired in 2006. My many years of experience teaching in the classroom have prepared me to be a good teacher "on the water" as well. In March of 2002 I traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Besides five days of outstanding entertainment, etc, in D.C., I received $7,500 to be used at Brainerd High School to improve mathematics teaching! I have also coached football, basketball, and track for many years.
Very few of the twelve Nisswa Guides fish tournaments. Our group is busy taking about 1500 four-hour trips each summer. The Nisswa Professional Guides League has been operating for about 40 years and lists Al Lindner, Ron Lindner and Gary Roach as former members.
Our Guides League has a strong regional and national reputation. I recently fished with a retired couple from California whose goal was to catch walleyes in Minnesota with a Nisswa Guide. They had read about the Nisswa Guides in a Better Homes and Gardens article about the ten "must" things to do in the United States. We (the Nisswa Guides) hosted the "top brass" of the Minnesota Governor's Opener in 1989, 1993 and 2001 here in the Brainerd Lakes Area. I fished with Al Garber, the Department of Natural Resources Commissioner, at the 2001 Opener.
